From Reds Under the Bed to Persians Under The Carpet: Iran and the US in the Post Cold War World
HOME > LECTURES&EVENTS > SPEAKERS > Professor Ali Ansari > From Reds Under the Bed to Persians U...
|
Not a day goes by without the Islamic Republic of Iran garnering column inches that veer ever more wildly from the terrified to the jingoistic. Since the Islamic Revolution in 1979, and particularly since the 9/11, and the War on Terror, Iran has been a thorn in the side of US foreign policy. Now, with the United States still processing the quagmire of Iraq, the prospect of a more confident, belligerent and potentially nuclear Iran presents a unique challenge to “the west”.
Placing the relationship between Iran and the United States in historical context, the Professor Ansari will look at the shared historical experiences, events and developments which have shaped Iran’s relationship with the United States and the West in general. The talk will aim to explain and analyse the roots of mistrust, the competing narratives and mythologies of confrontation which have shaped the views of the political elites and how these may be overcome in the future.
