Peter Florence has founded the world’s five leading literary festivals in Hay, Mantova, Cartagena, Segovia and Parati. He is the Director of Hay Festivals. He has advised and consulted for twelve other festivals in the UK and Europe. He is a Fellow of The Japan Foundation and The British America Project. He was awarded an MBE for services to literature in the New Year’s Honours list, 2005.
Peter Florence was born in Kingston on 4th October 1964. He was educated at Jesus College, Cambridge and Universite de Paris IV, La Sorbonne. He holds an MA in Modern and Medieval Literatures, and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Glamorgan.
He writes jokes for politicians, who sometimes use them, and less frequently get them. He lectures regularly on creative economy, rural
community and arts management.
He is married to the publisher Becky Shaw. They have four sons and live in Hay.
